Courtyard

 Courtyard

A courtyard between Pfeffer Torode Architecture and an adjacent music venue was damaged following the Nashville tornado in March 2020. The space is informal in that its original condition was not a courtyard, but instead a neglected void off an alley, between two buildings. The redesign of the space features tall walls of expanded metal mesh that help give a sense of enclosure and scale that is expected of a courtyard, while simultaneously leaving the boundary unresolved. This effect is achieved by curving the panels such that they stop short of their intended termination points. A waterjet-cut steel panel provides a back drop for views from within the adjoining architecture studio. A custom steel table and orb fire-pit create moments for gathering within the courtyard.
